Finally, a Quiet Place is a short narrative game built in GB Studio.
You play as a young kid trapped inside their old family home. When you finally find the key to the front door… it comes to life. Together, you and the key explore the house, forming a strange and tender bond.
Every room is filled with objects you can interact with to uncover bits of story. After meeting the key, revisiting these objects unlocks new dialogues that reveal more about the characters, their past, and the meaning of your unlikely companionship.
A walkthrough by Youtuber Pesmori plays.
Built in 3 days for the 2023 Game Boy Showdown, under the theme “Friendly.”
I kept the gameplay simple to focus on dialogue writing and environmental storytelling — every room is designed to be fully explorable and worth a second look.
Playable in any browser, on PC or mobile.
Play the game on your phone to turn it into a GameBoy.
Sound Design: The Clocks' Ticking
For the sound design, I wanted to create a sense of isolation while keeping the atmosphere friendly, to really emphasize the bond with the talking key.
To do this, I used the ticking of clocks to build a heavy silence, gradually adding tension with small variations. Each room has its own version of the clock sound: it echoes in the bathroom, fades in the attic, and changes rhythm in the hallway and living room — subtle shifts in pitch and timing to create unease without overwhelming the player.
This approach was quick to implement, much faster than crafting a looping melody, and perfect for the short deadline I was working with.
